Dean of Learning and Teaching

Professor Jethro Newton

Jethro Newton was appointed Dean of Learning and Teaching on 1 August 2004, having previously held the position of Director of Academic Quality Support Services.

He is Executive Editor and Editorial Board member of the international journal, Quality in Higher Education.

Prior to that he held positions at the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education, the Open University, and the University of Bradford.

Jethro studied sociology, literature and the history of ideas at Bradford, gained a Graduate Certificate of Education from the University of Leeds, and was awarded a Masters in Sociology and Social Policy by the University of Salford. He received his doctorate from the University of Wales.

His academic interests and publications are in the areas of higher education policy, including evaluation of policy and strategy implementation in learning and teaching, and Jethro has made keynote presentations on these topics at international conferences on all five continents. He is Executive Editor and Editorial Board member of the international journal, Quality in Higher Education.

An experienced QAA auditor, Jethro contributes to the European Universities Association (EUA) Institutional Evaluation Programme and has completed assignments for the EUA in Portugal, Turkey and Lebanon. He has also worked in an advisory capacity on higher education policy as a member of the International Advisory Board of the National Science Research Foundation of South Africa.

Jethro has pursued his wider academic interests at national level, in both the UK and Wales, through membership of the HEFCE Assessment Panel for the CETL initiative, the Advisory Panel for the Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship Scheme, and as a member of the Expert Group on Learning and Teaching providing advice to the Assembly Government for Wales ‘Review of Higher Education'. A former member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales Learning and Teaching Committee, he also chaired the Welsh Universities Academic Development Group.

As head of the University's Learning and Teaching Institute, Jethro has responsibility for learning and teaching strategy, professional standards, pedagogic research, learning support services, student achievement and retention, and institutional student surveys.
