The university is one of the oldest English higher education establishments of any kind, pre-dating all but Oxford, Cambridge, London and Durham, and its original buildings in the ancient city of Chester were the first in the country to be purpose-built for the professional training of teachers.
Education degrees are now just a small part of the 130 course combinations on offer, with some 14,000 students, drawn from the United Kingdom and overseas studying undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The university has a growing research culture with the emphasis very much on research that has practical benefits both economically and culturally, and the University provides consultancy support across a variety of areas of expertise.
The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SES) has a long tradition in delivering physical education and sports science degrees. We are immensely proud of this tradition as well as the quality of our teaching and our emerging research pedigree in sport and exercise sciences.
The Department offers BSc and BA degrees in Sport and Exercise Sciences and Sports Development. In addition, we deliver the world renowned MSc programme in the Sociology of Sport and Exercise and the MSc programme in Sports Science.
The Department's provision ensures an interdisciplinary approach for students, focusing on the areas of Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Sociology of Sport, Performance Analysis and Sports Pedagogy and Coaching.
