FAQs

What is the allocation policy?

Obviously the University is unable to provide accommodation for all First year undergraduate Students. Therefore we take the following criteria into account:

  • Location - Places are allocated to those who live the furthest from the University.
  • First Choice - The Student has selected the University as his/her first choice of study.
  • Special Needs or Circumstances - Such as Special Medical Conditions.
  • Late Applications - Students who are offered a place through Clearing are less likely to recieve a place in the University accommodation, as a large amount will have already been allocated.

What should I do if I am not allocated Student Accommodation?

Firstly, don’t panic - there are always other students in the same situation as you. If you have not been offered University accommodation you will receive a list of private sector landlords within the area who are advertising student properties.
All the properties on the list have been accredited/licensed by Chester City Council and are close to the University.Once you receive the list you will need to contact the landlords directly to make appointments to view the properties.
If you agree to accommodate the property, you will be required to sign and participate in a contractal agreement, containing regulations the landlord will require you to obide by.
It is vital you check your contract thoroughly and understand all the regulations you are agreeing to before you sign the contract.

Will my preferences be guaranteed?

Whilst the University will always try to match a student's specific preferences, it is not always possible.
Many of the options (e.g. self-catered, en-suite) will be oversubscribed so it may be necessary to offer you a type of accommodation that is lower down your list of preferences.

What do I do if I am unhappy with the offer of accommodation?

The advice that we give to students who are unhappy with the type of accommodation they have been offered, is to accept the offer and once they arrive apply for a room change. Once rooms become available we will endeavour to try and match up your requirements. Although this process may take some time, students' requirements are normally met. It is not possible to change the offer of accommodation at the offer stage.

What happens if Chester is my insurance choice or I come through clearing?

To be eligible for accommodation you must complete a University of Chester accommodation application form. After we receive your application it will be processed, if we are unable to offer you University accommodation, you will need to find accommodation in the private sector. The Accommodation Office will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have about private sector accommodation.

Can I move in any earlier than the start date?

The earliest date that you can move into your residence is Sunday 26th September 2010. It is not possible to move into your accommodation before this date.

How do I pay my rent?

Rent can be paid in two ways; firstly you can pay upfront in a single payment and receive a 1% discount if paid by the advertised date. Secondly you can pay by direct debit over three instalments (one per term). The three instalments will correspond with student loan dates.

What do I need to bring with me?

This really depends on the type of accommodation offered. All students need to bring a full set of bedding including a duvet; however bedding packs are available to buy from the University if you wish to do so. If you are allocated self or semi-catered accommodation you will also need to bring with you some cooking utensils, pans and cutlery. All accommodation is supplied with ironing facilities.

The rest is up to you although the University does not permit you to bring large items of furniture e.g. beds, wardrobes and large electrical appliances. Remember the rooms are not huge so just bring what you need to live comfortably!

Can I bring pets?

No, the University will only allow guide dogs within University accommodation.

Will my belongings be insured?

No, the University does not offer automatic cover to students so you will need to arrange insurance prior to taking up residence.
