Types of accommodation
The university has several
different types of accommodation on offer to students. They are:
-
Full board - campus based
Halls of Residence with breakfast, lunch and evening meals (term time only - 35
weeks apart from John Milton Hall, 41 weeks).
-
Semi-catered - university
owned properties with lunch and evening meals included "term time only" - leaving 41
weeks
-
Self-catered - university
owned properties only - 41 weeks.
-
Head Tenancy - privately
owned local properties managed by the university - 44 weeks.
Students can apply for extra
Meal Scheme options if required.
Applying for accommodation
This application procedure
is entirely separate from your application to your Local Authority or the Student Loan Company for student
finance (see Tuition Fees). However, you may need to have finance in place
to pay for accommodation as soon as term starts.
In June or July 2010 you
will be sent a Student Accommodation
Guide with a reply slip with questions on room requirements so you can
indicate your three accommodation choices in order of preference.
After the Accommodation
Department have received these, they will allocate rooms according to
availability and send you a Form of
Agreement to sign in August 2010. This is a formal contract which you
should read carefully and understand before signing and returning to us. The
Form of Agreement will contain a Direct
Debit Mandate which allows us to charge your rent to your bank account. It
will also include applications for the Meal Scheme and Bedding Packs.
Accommodation Deposit
To reserve your room, you must pay a cheque
for £250 deposit when you return your forms. This deposit is banked and is
returned 28 days after the end of the academic year, subject to the following:
1. No outstanding charges for
rent or meals.
2. The accommodation being vacated and furnishings and fittings being in the same condition as the
commencement of the contract subject to normal wear and tear.
3. Completion of a full
academic year.
4. Resnet cables are returned.
5. Return of keys or payment in
lieu.
6. Payment of any other fees or
charges which may be owed to the university by the student on any account
whatsoever.
Note: If you fail to take up your offer of accommodation or
leave during the academic year you will have your deposit withheld.
Freshers Sunday
Freshers Sunday is the day you arrive at the university for the
first time. You will be directed to a registration area where you will be given
your keys and an invoice for the first here will be representatives from the Finance Department available with a debit/credit card terminal if you wish to make a payment on this day.
Change of Personal Details
If you change any of your
personal details, such as your address or bank account, during your stay at the
university, you must inform the Finance Department immediately. This also
applies if you have changed your bank details with the Student Loan Company.
Leaving University Accommodation
If you decide to leave
university accommodation you must complete an Accommodation Department withdrawal form. You will be charged for rent until you supply us with your form, even though you may already
have left the premises, and also will be liable for the remainder of the term in which you withdraw. If this is less than 4 weeks, a surcharge will be levied equivalent to the 4 weeks rent. The 4 weeks commences from completion of both Registry and Accommodation Withdrawal forms.
Informing Registry of leaving your course is dealt with
separately - Registry will not automatically pass on information to the
Accommodation Department.
Remember: If your financial circumstances deteriorate (or your
student loan is delayed) and paying your rent becomes a problem, please tell
Finance and we will try to help you and arrange an easier payment plan if
necessary.
Fines
If payment is not made on,
or before, the due dates as specified in the contract or if direct debits fail
because funds are not available, a fine of £25
will be charged. If payment is not made within a further 14 days, a second fine of £25
will be charged. These fines are levied on a termly basis up to a maximum
of £50 per term.
Failure to pay your fees on
time could cause you to have to vacate your room. However, you will still be
liable for the fees and any fines for the full academic year.
