University Bursary FAQs

Do I have to apply for a university bursary?

No, you will automatically be assessed for a university bursary if you have applied for and are eligible for means-tested financial support from Student Finance.

How will I find out if I will receive a university bursary?

When your university bursary has been approved, you will receive a letter confirming your entitlement to the bursary. This letter will be sent to the correspondence address that Student Finance hold for you. This will usually be within six weeks of the first week of term. If your assessment for financial support by Student Finance has been delayed, then notification and payment of your bursary will also be delayed.

How will my university bursary be paid?

If you are a first or second year student and you are eligible for the book credit, the credit will be available on your University ID card for you to spend once your bursary has been approved. All cash payments will be paid directly in to your bank account.

I am entitled to the book credit but payment has been delayed

If you think you are entitled to the book credit please keep any receipts for items you purchase from John Smith’s bookshop. If your bursary is approved, you can then take your receipts and your University ID card to the bookshop and they will refund any purchases you have made before this date and deduct the credit from your bursary account.

How can I change my bank account details?

You will need to contact Student Finance to change your bank account details; we are unable to do this on your behalf.

I think my bursary calculation is wrong.

If you think your bursary has been miscalculated, please email university.bursary@chester.ac.uk with your name, student number and date of birth, explaining why you think the calculation is incorrect. An advisor will look in to your situation and provide you with a response as soon as possible.

I am receiving a different university bursary amount this year than I did last year, why is this?

Your bursary entitlement is calculated every year and is dependent upon the information you have submitted to Student Finance. If your circumstances have changed, then your bursary entitlement may also have changed.

My university bursary has not been confirmed, why is this?

There are a number of reasons why students experience delays in receiving confirmation of their university bursary. If you believe that you are eligible for a university bursary, but have not received confirmation before your first expected payment date, then please try the following:

Contact Student Finance on 0845 607 7577 to check:

1. You have consented to share your information

2. Your parents / guardian / spouse have consented to share their information

3. All of your evidence has been verified

4. You have stated the correct tuition fee for this academic year (£3,375 for 2011)
