Work Shadowing

Work shadowing is a service offered by Careers and Employability.

Students and Graduates

Undertaking work shadowing will help you to develop employability skills by:

  • giving you first hand experience in a working environment.
  • enabling you to relate your course of study to your chosen career path.
  • helping you to decide if your chosen career is right for you.
  • giving you an opportunity to meet a valuable contact for the future.

If you are interested in a particular field or role we will try to arrange visits on request.  To discuss the available visits, or for further details, please contact the work shadowing team using the details below.

Our work shadowing programme is designed to offer you the opportunity to visit experienced professionals within career areas that interest you.  The visits are arranged to suit your timetable.

Want to organise your own visit?

It may seem daunting at first, but showing that you have the initiative to go out and set one of these visits up for yourself is something that will really make professionals sit up and take notice.  You will find that many people are happy to help, and are prepared to take the time to pass on some of their experience.

Things to consider:

  • Your lecturers may have some useful contacts to get you started
  • Do your research into the company, to avoid asking for information that is widely available
  • If you haven’t got the name of a specific person then contact the company, introduce yourself and ask to speak to the relevant department
