Chris Allan (British)

MSc in Strategic Management 2008

What attracted you to the programme?

“I always knew I wanted to get into branding and design, but had no idea how. Before I did my MSc I think I was quite naïve, so it helped me to discover a lot about the workings of a company and the areas of work I felt most inspired by. I'm sure that this led me to not only find my first job but to secure it.

“I truly believe I would not be in my current job as a Junior Brand Strategist with an international brand design agency if I did not have my MSc. Not simply because of the lovely 'MSc with distinction' on my CV, but because it was a dynamic and well run course that drove me to want to succeed and get the job I always wanted. It really was an interesting, illuminating and character changing year. I thoroughly enjoyed it!”

What I discovered during the course?

“The course modules made you think about each discipline through a strategic lens, and the tactics needed to achieve success in business. I found this knowledge easily translatable to my current line of work. It improved my writing skills which inspired me to write a blog on design and this was the main reason my CV was chosen by my employer. The group skills I learnt on the MSc helped in the parts of the interview that involved a larger amount of applicants working together.”

My future goals

“I started my career as a Brand Insight Researcher and my role was to research and generate consumer and brand insight for a multitude of projects. I have been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places with this role; Geneva, Beirut, Frankfurt, Madrid, Paris, Moscow, Copenhagen and many more!

“Within two years I was promoted to Junior Creative Brand Strategist, with the intent to lose the junior within a year or so. I'm proud of this achievement, and honoured to be given the opportunity.”
