About Us

The Centre will continue a range of studies developed with a team of academics and clinicians focusing on a range of areas including, but not restricted to:
  • The management of mental health in acute hospitals
  • Dual sensory impairment in later life and community competence
  • Self-neglect in later life
  • Negotiating relationships after a diagnosis of dementia
  • Using the Mass Observation Archive to understand later life
  • Dietary habits and later life including malnutrition
  • Using narrative to understand the condition of dementia
  • Suicide in later life
  • Safeguarding vulnerable adults (The Savile Enquiry membership)
  • Technology and ageing
  • Working with black and minority ethnic groups with mental health challenges in later life

Members of the Centre contribute to professional bodies and organisations in the UK and internationally, for example the Board of the International Psychogeriatric Association, the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry, Public Health England, as well as numerous committees in the Third Sector, Age Concern Birmingham, Independent Chairs of Safeguarding Boards in Leeds and Wigan, the Savile Enquiry etc. Members are also advising the General Medical Council on a new postgraduate curriculum to enhance the care of older people, the Professional Standards Authority of improved professional regulation, and the Royal College of General Practitioners on competences for GPs related to Dementia treatment and care. 

Centre colleagues are members of a variety of Editorial Boards: for example, International Psychogeriatrics, The Journal of Adult Protection, The Journal of Elder Abuse and Neglect, Social Care and Welfare Ethics, etc.
