Simon Alford

Simon joined the Centre for Public Health Research as a researcher in June 2004 after completing the MSc in Exercise and Nutrition Science at the University of Chester.

Overview

Prior to joining the Centre, Simon completed a BSc (Hons) in Physical Education and Sports Science and an MSc in Exercise and Nutrition Science here at the University of Chester. Simon came to University as a mature student, having had a career in sports development.

 

Teaching

Simon contributes to the undergraduate Sport and Exercise Sciences programme in the area of research methods. He also supports the work of postgraduate students on the MSc in Research methods and MSc in Public Health through his role as SPSS support tutor.

Simon is the Chair of the Faculty of Applied Sciences Research Ethics Committee and the Centre's representative on the Committee.

Research

Simon has a wide range of research interests relating to public health, especially in the field of exercise and nutrition and with a particular interest in obesity. He is also interested in the delivery of primary care services that address smoking, alcohol and drug-related issues. Since joining the Centre, Simon has developed an interest in data management and the use of geographical information systems (GIS) to understand service usage, particularly in areas of deprivation. Simon has worked on a number of projects, particularly those involving the evaluation of complex community-based interventions, for example, Children's Fund initiatives and healthy living centres.
