Professor Nigel W. John

Senior Research Professor

Nigel graduated from Bath in 1986 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics & Computing. He obtained his PhD in Mathematical Sciences in 1989 also from Bath University. Following a career in industry working for ICI, Zeneca and Silicon Graphics, he returned to academia and held posts at Manchester and Bangor Universities before joining Chester in 2015.

Overview

Nigel W. John holds a chair in computer science at the University of Chester since 2015. Previously he was director of research within the School of Computer Science (and was acting head of School 2006-7) at Bangor University. He led the Visualization and Medical Graphics Research Group that he established at Bangor in 2003. He was a co-Director and founder of the Welsh Assembly Government funded Research Institute of Visual Computing, and Director and founder of the Biomedical Research Unit for Advanced Medical Imaging and Visualization.

Prof. John has been awarded grants for many projects funded by the Research Councils and European Commission involving high performance visualisation, haptics and virtual environments.  In 2006, he received the Twelfth Annual Satava Award for accomplishments to the field of computer graphics and medical visualization. Each year the award is presented to an individual or group who demonstrate unique vision and commitment to the improvement of medicine with the use of advanced technology.

Prof John is a member of the EPSRC College. He is an elected Fellow of the Eurographics Association and was co-chair of the EG2001 and EG2008 conferences, and formerly the chair of the Eurographics Professional Board. He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales (elected in 2014). In 2013 he became a Churchill Travelling Fellow.

Teaching

Nigel specialises in teaching computer graphics topics at both undergraduate and masters level. Recent modules taught include advanced rendering techniques, virtual environments, and computer animation.

Research

Nigel’s primary research interests are in the application of computer graphics, haptics, and virtual environments to medical applications, and he has an international reputation in this field. Recent projects have included creating simulators for training interventional radiology, and the use of augmented reality for anatomy education.  He has been successful in gaining over £10 Million of funding for his research. Other projects include the application of virtual environments to sports and a simulator for training rugby ball passing skills has been built.

Nigel has so far successfully supervised eight PhD students to completion, and is regularly an external examiner for other universities.
