Overview
For eleven years, I worked at the Manchester Metropolitan University, in a variety of roles, including research associate, research fellow, senior lecturer and postgraduate programme leader, for the ESRC approved Master of Research programme. Throughout my early career, I was extensively involved in a wide range of externally funded research projects and independent evaluations. These included evaluations sponsored by the Institute of Global Ethics and Citizenship Foundation (lead evaluator), DfES and Wellcome Foundation (co-director), Joint Information Systems Committee, Sports Coach UK (bid author), Learning and Skills Research Council, Lego-Siemens Schools-Industry Partnership and National Evaluation of Sure Start (bid author).
In 2007, I moved to Liverpool John Moores University, initially to a role as Reader of Citizenship Education, before embracing a new and more demanding position as postgraduate programme leader and senior lecturer in education studies. Here, I developed and validated a new Master of Research degree and played a central role in developing and supporting research training for postgraduate students within the Faculty. I am currently supervising four PhD and EdD students, and have six completions with two more anticipated later this year. Relatedly, I have examined four PhDs and was previously external examiner for the MA Education (research pathway) at the University of Central Lancashire (2005-2009).
In my previous role, I also taught education policy to undergraduate students of education studies, developed the module ‘equality and human rights' on the special and inclusive needs route and supervised dissertations at level 3. Throughout, I have remained actively involved in research and scholarly activity: publishing, presenting papers at international conferences and working on sustained writing projects, both independently and in collaboration with other colleagues.
Research
My research interests span a fairly wide and eclectic range of issues and themes but are generally informed by a critical perspective and firm commitment to social justice. Over the years, this has centred on the analysis and critique of citizenship education, conducted from a variety of angles and perspectives, including monarchy, identity, performativity, sport and ‘race' and ethnicity, which, in different ways, have related to particular aspects of education policy.
I am also interested in emerging notions of professionalism, including, for example, the professionalisation of sports coaching and formation of identities in higher education.
This substantive focus is coupled with a long-standing interest in research methodologies and their underpinning philosophies, in particular those of phenomenology, philosophical hermeneutics and the post-structural theorizing of Foucault's oeuvre.
Current funded projects and bids
I am Co-Investigator of an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project (£98k), entitled: ‘Hands off Sports Coaching!: The politics of touch', with H. Piper (P.I.).
I am Principal Investigator of a research project proposal currently under consideration with the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, entitled: ‘A personal and social curriculum for civic re-engagement: the role of critical thinking and philosophical enquiry at Key Stage 3', with H. Piper (Co-I).
