Dr Katharine Welsh

Senior Lecturer

I am a hydro-geomorphic modeller with interests in flooding, sediment dynamics, climate change, GIS, palaeoenvironments and developing the landscape evolution model CAESAR-Lisflood.  Research areas include the English Lake District, French Alps and South West Australia.  I am also an advocate of enhancing the student learning experience and focus on how technology (particularly mobile technologies and social media) can be used to enhance the student experience in both the classroom and during fieldwork.

Research

Integrating Hillslope processes into CAESAR-LIsflood: Working with academics from the University of Liverpool to improve the representation of hillslope processes in CAESAR-Lisflood landscape evolution model.

Modelling the impact of fire on alluvial fan evolution (December 2015-present):  Working with Philip Marren and a team of researchers from other institutions, we are investigating the role fires play in alluvial fan evolution using a modelling framework.

Staff-student partnerships (December 2015-present):  Working with Ruth Healey, Derek France and Alex Lerczak, we are investigating the nature of staff-student partnerships in the Department of Geography and International Development.

Enhancing Fieldwork Learning and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) (August 2013- present):  Continuing the success of the ‘Enhancing Fieldwork Learning’ project, myself and the team continue research into student and practitioners perspectives of “Bring Your Own Device” both in a fieldwork and classroom environment.

Twitter as a tool for student engagement during fieldwork (2012-present): Working with Derek France and Anthony Cliffe, we are investigating the changing role of Twitter as a tool for student engagement in the field.
