Student Opportunities and Experience

The Department believe strongly in reinforcing the academic content of the programme by providing applied work opportunities for students. Here students may apply theory to practice in a ‘real-world' environment, working closely with athletes and coaches to improve performance through applied science. To facilitate this, the Department have close working relationships with a number of sporting bodies. A list of these groups and some examples of the work conducted by students is provided below.

Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club

Students may apply for an Internship in the disciplines of Performance Analysis, Exercise Physiology and Strength and Conditioning. Following a formal  application and interview procedure, appointed students work on a voluntary basis in each of the described areas. Under the guidance of the lead sport scientist, Director of Youth Performance and Player Performance Manager, students are responsible for working with youth players engaged in the club's Scholarship Programme.

Responsibilities include video analysis of individual/squad training (Performance Analysts), individual coaching of the gym-based programmed (Strength and Conditioning) and quarterly fitness testing of players (Exercise Physiologists). Work takes place both at the Wolves' training facilities and in the Department's various laboratories. Therefore, students are provided with excellent opportunities to apply theory in a real-world professional environment, and develop various skills to enhance employability beyond their studies.

English Institute of Sport

In collaboration with the English Institute of Sport, we have applied MSc placements working with the Olympic cycling squad's performance analysis team. Throughout the placement students have the opportunity to implement their knowledge and understanding of performance analysis within a world class applied setting. Students spend one day per week with the analysis team in Manchester working on performance-based projects. This enables students to gain valuable experience of assessing, implementing and working within a full-time performance analysis environment.
