Overview of Programmes

The Department of Social Studies and Counselling offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, all under the social science 'umbrella'.

We ensure a mix of theory and practice, making our programmes relevant to employment and we have strong links with professional bodies and with relevant industry.

Most of our undergraduate programmes can be combined with one another, and we draw on the expertise of our staff to deliver areas of specialism across programmes. Most of our programmes are delivered from the Chester campus. The various police qualifications are taught on our Warrington campus.

At undergraduate level, we offer Single and Combined Honours Criminology, Single and Combined Honours Sociology, Combined Honours Counselling SkillsSingle Politics and Combined Honours Politics, Combined Honours Economics and Combined Honours International Relations.

In many cases, students can move relatively easily from Combined to Single degrees (or vice versa). In the first few weeks of teaching, combinations can be changed.

This gives our students unusual flexibility. A work placement of five weeks is offered on all our undergraduate programmes. We run an annual high-profile academic conference for the benefit of all our students, run by our students.

For people interested in counselling traning we offer a short introductory course in Counselling.

At postgraduate level we offer an MSc in Psychological Trauma, MA in Counselling Studies, MA in Clinical Counselling and a Certificate in Counselling Supervision.

All our staff are experienced lecturers, and many have a strong research reputation. We ensure a mix of theory and practice, making our programmes relevant to employment and we have strong links with professional bodies and with relevant industry.
