Francis Tsokpo Aweso - PGCE Religious Education
When I arrived in the UK in 2005 from Ghana, it was initially very difficult to find a teaching post. I therefore registered with an agency and did some supply work in schools across Greater Manchester. I decided to do the PGCE course in 2008 and chose the University of Chester.
I have always wanted to study at Chester and I think I made the right choice. The experience is amazing and I have made some wonderful friends. Teaching is excellent and support from staff is very great. Though the greater part of my course is spent in school, I always look forward to coming to the university on Fridays.
I would recommend the university to anybody who wants to further their education. I am visiting Ghana in July with a friend from the university and I will be advertising it when we go.
Shai Kassim - PGCE Primary
I moved to England from Japan a year ago. At first it was a culture shock, but soon with the help of the lectures and the students in my group, I felt right at home.
One of the reasons I chose University of Chester was because Chester is a similar size to Mombasa, the town in Kenya where I was born. People are very friendly and always seem willing to help when you need it, especially when you are lost!
I would recommend University of Chester to all especially to international students who worry about fitting in.
Roland Worrell - BA Education Studies and Geography
I came to Chester as an International student from Barbados, I didn't know much about Chester except that it was close to Liverpool and Manchester. Moving away from home in the Caribbean to live and study here is quite an experience. It was difficult at first adjusting to the climate, the local culture and being on my own. However I was able to become good friends with my housemates and also met people through part time and voluntary work.
At Chester there is a lot of support available especially from lecturers who were very approachable with academic problems; student welfare and my International Officer helped with any personal or financial problems. I also gained some guidance from my Personal Academic Tutor who helped me secure a place to do my PGCE in London.
Coming from a small country it helps that Chester isn't a large city, everything is in walking distance (saves on bus fare) and it's much easier to adjust to instead of being lost in a large city. I have learned a lot here at Chester and I enjoyed my course as I was able to take a look into the education system, the way children learn and issues in education without committing myself into a career in teaching.
