Parkgate Road Campus

Previously referred to as the Chester Campus, Parkgate Road Campus is a short walk from the city centre and is the oldest of our sites, dating back to 1839 with a blend of old and new buildings. Many of the University's central services and facilities can be found here.

Chester is linked directly to the national motorway system via the M53. London and all the major regions of the UK are easily accessible from the city.

The campus is situated along Parkgate Road (A540), which is a continuation of Northgate Street leading out from the city centre. Access to the main car park is by the Exton Park entrance.

By Rail

Chester is well served by the railway network and has frequent, fast rail links to London and major cities in the UK. Journey times are: London 2hrs 10mins, Birmingham 2hrs, Manchester 1hr 10mins to 1hr 30mins. Liverpool is approximately 45mins away and there are four trains an hour between Liverpool and Chester.

Parkgate Road Campus is 20 minutes' walk from Chester Railway Station, and a taxi will cost approximately £5. A bus service runs at regular intervals between the Railway Station and Chester City Centre. Our Parkgate Road Campus is only ten minutes' walk from the city centre.

By Coach

Chester has regular National Express Coach services from most towns and cities in the UK to the Delamere Street Bus Depot.

By Air

Manchester International Airport is 35 miles from Chester and can be reached in 40mins by road or 1hr 10mins by rail. Liverpool Airport is 25 miles from Chester and can be reached in 35mins by road and in under 1hr 30mins by public transport.

By Sea

Holyhead and Liverpool both have ferry ports, which are within easy reach of Chester by road and rail. Holyhead is 1hr 50mins by rail or 1hr 30mins by road and has ferries to Dublin. Liverpool is 45mins by rail and 40mins by road and has ferries to Belfast, Dublin and Douglas, Isle of Man.

The Kingsway Buildings are home to the Faculty of Arts and Media, offering rehearsal and performance studios, gallery space, design studios and various workshop spaces.

From the M53

Exit at Junction 12 and at the roundabout take the third exit onto the A56 signposted Chester A56. At the next roundabout take the second exit signposted A56 Chester City Centre. After approximately 3/4 mile, turn right onto Newton Lane. Continue over the bridge and then turn right onto Kingsway. The Kingsway Buildings are a short way ahead of you on your left.

From the A55

Take the exit signposted A56 Chester/Helsby. At the roundabout take the first exit signposted Chester A56. At the next roundabout take the second exit signposted A56 Chester City Centre. After approximately 3/4 mile, turn right onto Newton Lane. Continue over the bridge and then turn right onto Kingsway. The Kingsway Buildings are a short way ahead of you on your left.

From the A41

Exit onto the A56 signposted Chester City Centre. After approximately 3/4 mile, turn right onto Newton Lane. Continue over the bridge and then turn right onto Kingsway. The Kingsway Buildings are a short way ahead of you on your left.

Located right in the heart of the city centre, the Riverside Campus occupies a prestigious waterfront location and houses our Faculty of Education and Children's Services and the Faculty of Health and Social Care.

From the A5116/Liverpool Road

Take the third exit at the Fountains Roundabout onto the A5268/St Martin's Way (signposted North Wales, All through Traffic). Continue forward down St Martin's Way, through several sets of traffic lights and onto Nicholas Street until reaching another major roundabout (the Grosvenor Road Roundabout). At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A483 (signposted North Wales, Lache, Saltney). Turn left onto Castle Drive (this turning can be found immediately following a set of traffic lights with the Racecourse on your right). Once on Castle Drive you will see a long-stay pay and display car park on your right (the Little Roodee Car Park costs £3.00 for up to 3 hours and £4.90 for 3 to 6 hours). Exiting the car park on foot and continuing along Castle Drive (with the river on your right), Riverside is 200 yards on your left.

From the A56/Hoole Way

At the roundabout at the end of the A56, take the third exit (signposted North Wales, All through Traffic). At the next roundabout, take the second exit (signposted North Wales, All through Traffic), and then follow the instructions from St Martin's Way in the A5116 directions above.

From the A51

Turn left into Grosvenor Park Road and follow the A5268 round in the direction of the A483/North Wales/Wrexham. After approximately 1/2 mile on the A5268 (Vicar's Lane/Pepper Street/Grosvenor Street), at the Grosvenor Road Roundabout take the second exit onto the A483 (signposted North Wales, Lache, Saltney). Take the first left onto Castle Drive, and then follow the instructions from Castle Drive in the A5116 directions above.

From the A483

After crossing the bridge over the River Dee, take the first right onto Castle Drive, and then follow the instructions from Castle Drive in the A5116 directions above.

Warrington Campus

The Warrington Campus is a modern self-contained 30-acre university campus that specialises in delivering innovative and employment focused courses within four main sectors: Media; Business; Public Services and Sport.

The main entrance to Warrington Campus is on Crab Lane.

From the M62

Exit at Junction 11 and follow the A574 to Warrington. After crossing the M6, take the third exit off the University Place roundabout, following signs for the University on to Crab Lane.

From the M6 Northbound

Take Junction 21 to join the B5210. Go straight across all six roundabouts, following signs for the University.

From the M6 Southbound

Take junction 21A off the M6 to join the M62 eastbound, following signs for Manchester. Take junction 11 off the M62. Then follow directions as given from the M62.

By Rail

Warrington is well served by the railway network and has frequent, fast rail links to London and major cities in the UK. Journey times are: London 2hrs, Birmingham 1hr 15mins, Preston 25mins. Manchester and Liverpool trains stop at Birchwood, Padgate and Warrington (Central) and it only takes just over 30mins to reach the city centre.

The nearest rail station is Birchwood, which is approximately 20mins walking distance. Taxis are available from outside the station and cost approximately £6.50.

By Coach

Warrington is on the national coach network; National Express coaches call at Warrington bus station. Local buses (numbers 24 and 25) depart at regular intervals from Warrington bus station and stop near the Warrington campus.

By Air

Manchester International Airport is 17 miles from the Warrington Campus and can be reached in 25mins by car or under an hour by rail. Liverpool Airport is 18 miles from the campus and can be reached in 30mins by car and in just over 30mins by public transport.

By Sea

Holyhead and Liverpool both have ferry ports, which are within easy reach of Warrington by road and rail. Holyhead is under 2hrs by road and approximately 2hrs 30mins by rail and has ferries to Dublin. Liverpool is just over 30mins by road or rail and has ferries to Belfast, Dublin and Douglas, Isle of Man.

Thornton Science Park

Formerly the Shell Technology Centre, Thornton Science Park is a world-class seat of excellence. This brand new state-of-the-art facility houses our Faculty of Science and Engineering, including the School of Computer Science and Mathematics

From the M6

Take junction 20 (from the South) or junction 20A (from the North), following signs for M56/North Wales/Chester/Runcorn. Leave the M56 at junction 14, following the sign for Helsby/Stanlow/A5117 (NB: there is no junction 13 between junctions 12 and 14) and follow signs for Stanlow/A5117 to the second set of traffic lights. Then turn right onto Pool Lane and follow signs for Shell Technology Centre Thornton. At the roundabout, take the first exit and park in the visitors’ car park.

From Parkgate Road Campus

Exit the campus at Exton Park and turn left onto Parkgate Road. At the roundabout, take the fourth exit onto the A5480/Countess Way, signposted Countess of Chester/Upton/Chester Zoo. At the next roundabout, take the first exit onto the A5116/Liverpool Road. After approximately one mile, turn left onto A41/Liverpool Road, signposted North Wales/Birkenhead/E’Port/Liverpool/Motorway, and then after another mile turn right at the traffic lights onto the A5032/Whitby Lane. At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A5117 and continue for approximately four miles, and then turn left onto Pool Lane and follow signs for Shell Technology Centre Thornton. At the roundabout, take the first exit and park in the visitors’ car park.

On arrival, you will need to report to the Trafford Building (110) in order to register and obtain a visitor’s pass.

By Rail

The three main railway stations serving Thornton Science Park are:

  • Ellesmere Port (3.7 miles away)
  • Helsby (3.7 miles away)
  • Chester (8.5 miles away)

These stations are well served by the railway network. From any of these stations, Thornton Science Park is then a short 8-15 minute taxi ride away.
