In this degree programme you will learn how to apply appropriate management principles and software to systematically manage information and communicate effectively. The professional and technical skills you develop are highly valued by employers, who know that they can enhance an organisation's performance and help it to meet its goals. 

The programme examines the role of information systems in the business environment, explores the interface between information technology and the key environmental factors, political, economic, and social, that constrain an organisation's activities. The core functions of business are also dealt with including communication, management and accounting.

The Foundation Degree is a distinctive award with a strong vocational element, concentrating on the internal and external influences that affect the business and management environment. A range of practical, theoretical and contemporary modules are offered. These have been designed in consultation with employers and professional bodies to ensure a high level of knowledge, skills and attributes are gained to enhance career prospects.

The award has a work based approach to its teaching, therefore providing an opportunity to enrich academic and vocational abilities through the application of knowledge to actual 'live' situations and case studies. This approach is enhanced by the valuable inclusion of a module at the end of each level that is a project based on an investigation (Level 4) and an implementation (Level 5) focused on the issues identified in the work environment.

The Foundation Degree qualification will empower you to be more effective and efficient as a user of information systems, communication and management principles.

On successful completion of this part-time programme, you will receive a Foundation Degree Science (FDSc) in Business Management and Information Systems. 

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree, students can 'top-up', reading the final year of a BSc Honours or BA honours degree programme.

The methods of study and assessment provide flexibility, minimising disturbance to workplace commitments, reducing the need to travel, and helping you to balance study, work and other responsibilities. The course is delivered by blended learning, a combination of on-line sessions and face-to-face lectures. You only have to attend University for one afternoon/evening (1pm to 7pm) every four weeks of each 15 week trimester; the remainder of the time will be e-learning at your own time and pace supported by a variety of e-communication with your tutors.

Graduates of this programme can expect to improve their career prospects in their current work place and enhance their employability in a diverse range of public and private sector organisations, ranging from companies needing data-driven websites and fast, cost efficient logistics to small businesses that need to enhance their information systems and communication to compete effectively.

We will consider applications from candidates who hold one of the following qualifications:

  • GCE and/or VCE A/AS Levels
  • BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
  • NVQ Level 3
  • Advanced GNVQ
  • Advanced Modern Apprenticeships in an appropriate subject
  • Irish Highers/Scottish Highers
