What Action You Need to Take

At the University of Chester we recognise that Graduation is an important occasion for both you and your family. It is a chance to celebrate all that you have achieved and we are dedicated to making the day a special one.

To be able to do this successfully we need your help. You should follow the instructions listed below carefully:


Graduates will need to take the following steps:

 Complete the online Graduation Booking Form - (you can only do this when your award has been confirmed)

  • The online booking form will open in January 2017

You must advise the Graduation Office if you wish to attend your Graduation Ceremony in person or if you wish to receive your award ‘in absentia’.

Either way, you must complete an on-line booking form, to confirm your intention.  If you choose to attend, the booking form will confirm the date and time of your Ceremony and give you the opportunity to book your tickets. If you choose not to attend, the booking form will enable you to confirm the address details of where you want your certificate to be sent within four weeks of the ceremonies taking place. It is essential that you let us know your intention either way by  Monday 13th February 2017.  If you do not have access to a computer, please contact the Graduation Office on 01244 512911 and a booking form will be completed for you.


N.B. You cannot access the online booking system until such time as your award has been confirmed by the University.


Order your academic dress

In order to participate in the Ceremony, you will be required to wear the full academic dress of the University. It is your responsibility to order your gown, hood and hat directly from Ede & Ravenscroft. You can do this either online at www.gownhire.co.uk from Monday 16th January 2017 or by telephoning their centre on 01223 861854. Those with speech or hearing impairments can use text phone - dial 1800101223861854 to access the RNID Typetalk system. Please make sure that you have ordered your academic dress at least 10 days before the Ceremonies are due to take place otherwise you may have to hire a gown on the day at an additional cost.


N.B. Your Graduation Ceremony is a formal event and as such it is recommended that you dress smartly. Casual attire such as jeans, t-shirts and trainers are not considered appropriate for this type of event. You should wear clothing that has buttons down the front i.e. shirt or blouse as the hood of your academic dress is secured by a loop. If you choose to wear clothing that does not have buttons then please ensure that you bring with you a brooch or safety pins to secure the hood. Staff from the Ede & Ravenscroft will be at the Cathedral to ensure that your academic dress is correct before you cross the platform to receive your degree / award.



University policy specifies that no award or degree will be presented to any person with an outstanding tuition fee debt. It is your responsibility to check if this is the case. Unpaid tuition fees must be settled by Monday 13th February 2017.  Any student who has not settled their tuition fee debts by this date will not be eligible to attend their graduation ceremony and their degree or award certificate with be withheld until such time as the debt has been cleared.



The official photographer to the University is Ede and Ravenscroft. It is not compulsory to book in advance, though it is advisable to avoid congestion on the day. Academic Appeals

University policy specifies that no student should attend their Graduation Ceremony pending the outcome of an Academic Appeal. It is your responsibility to contact the Graduation Office on 01244 512911 if you have an outstanding appeal. An Academic Appeal will not be accepted or considered further if you attend your Graduation Ceremony and accept your award, or if you accept your award in absentia.
