Sarah Ellison

Senior Lecturer, Public Health and Wellbeing

Since qualifying as a Registered Nurse (Adult ) in 1995 I have extensive experience across both acute and community settings. I started my career on an acute Elderly medical ward and then gained more specialist knowledge by working on a cardiology ward. I then worked on Coronary care and Critical Care areas.

Following completion of my BSc in Health and Social care with the main focus of my studies based on cardiology I then started as a Cardiac specialist nurse working in the Community. During this time I assisted in establishing a Community based Heart failure Specialist nurse service.

Throughout my career I have updated my practice to meet the ever-growing demands of specialist nursing. Incorporating the many elements of advanced practice in my role, this has included studies in advanced practice, mentoring and becoming an independent non-medical prescriber. I have also been an Advanced life support provider and instructor in the past.

More recently I have worked closely with the integrated care teams across the area.

MSc Professional Studies, Post Grad Cert in Clinical Case management, BSc (Hons) DipHe RN (Adult)

I am currently studying for the Post Graduate Certificate of Professional Education.

I teach on the Clinical Diagnostics NM7201, Clinical Examination NM7202 Modules and on the Non Medical Prescribing Module. I teach clinical skills to Pre Registration Students.

I am the link lecturer for the Community Advanced Practice Nurses group working closely with the Community matrons and specialist nurses.

My research interests include the needs of Adult Congenital Heart Disease patients. I have worked closely with the North West Cardiac Networks to develop a toolkit for Primary Care to assist with identification and on-going management of this patient group.

I have presented this work to the National Cardiac network directors.

The Journal of Cardiac Nursing, sponsored by the British Heart Foundation, awarded me for innovation through service development.
