Darren Poole

Postgraduate Research Student

I returned to academic study in 2007 after 15 years as a Head of History in several Staffordshire schools.

I completed my MA in Military History at Chester in 2007-08 and my dissertation focused on the Strategic Hamlets Program implemented during the Vietnam War. My main research interests lie in counter-insurgency and British colonial history. I am particularly concerned with how counter-insurgency theory can be adapted and improved to try and reduce casualties – civillian and military – in current and future conflicts.
My current PhD work looks at how modern counter-insurgency theory can help us analyse historical conflicts in Malaya and Vietnam and I am also using interviews with insurgents to provide an alternative point of view to the current historical record.
