Leadership Development and Change

This module is designed to promote a critical understanding of the need for effective leadership, within the health and social care setting, and to promote appropriate strategies for critical thinking and reflective practice.

The aim of the module is to enable students to use leadership skills in order to lead change in service provision, delivery and personal development.


By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • With critical insight, conduct a self-analysis of your personal leadership style and devise a personal leadership action plan.
  • Critically evaluate the knowledge, skills and attitudes of leadership to become an effective leader within the organisational context and wider health and social care environment.
  • Analyse the theories and models of leadership relating to the change process, and distinguish between a variety of approaches with particular reference to the human dimensions of change.
  • Critically appraise the importance of team leadership and development to the successful implementation of change.
  • Critically interpret and evaluate challenges to, and opportunities for, leadership that will stimulate and facilitate effective service change and sustainability within the context of national policy directives and social inclusion agendas.
  • Lead and create practices and partnerships that empower and enable clients and carers to make decisions and participate in their own management of care.
