Victoria Ridgway

Senior University Teaching Fellow, Faculty of Health and Social Care

I qualified as an adult nurse in 1993 after completing a BSc (Hons) in nursing. I worked in clinical practice until 2003, firstly as a surgical nurse specialising in Urology, then in 1999 I became a practice education facilitator. I undertook a MA Gerontology completing this in 2002, which ignited my passion and interest in this field and has led to further work and study in ageing and later life. I joined the University of Chester in 2003 as a lecturer, firstly working in the Pre-Registration Nursing Department and now in my current role as a Senior University Teaching Fellow. I am responsible for leading and implementing institutional enhancement initiatives at local level as well as having a key role in promoting and sharing good practice in my Faculty, across the University and HE sector.

I supervise students at undergraduate and post graduate levels, supporting students in a range of topics and research paradigms.

I am an experienced external examiner and my current position is with the University of London, St Georges for their postgraduate provision.

Research

My PhD explored the perceptions of ageing amongst undergraduate nursing students. This was a longitudinal study using a mixed method approach; I used visual research methods (drawings) and a more traditional quantitative method.

I have undertaken a number of small scale research projects, these include social work students’ perceptions of older people, revision of an attitude scale, students’ perceptions of nursing home placements, students’ perceptions of mentorship, role of nurse mentors as champions for older peoples’ nursing, development of student assessment reviewers, development of a University pre induction guide and the development of an e-learning tool for clinical supervision.
