Overview

Over the course of my career to date, I have played a leading role in establishing Master’s level education in the field of public relations in the UK , having established a led the first dedicated Master’s degree in the field at the University of Stirling in late 1980s and subsequently ran a similar programme at MMU prior to moving to Chester . I have supervised over 250 Master’s dissertations (individually and jointly).

Teaching

I have contributed to the supervision of a number of M.Phil/doctoral candidates, with 4 successful completions to date [3 PhD and 1 M.Phil]. Currently acting as a Director of Studies for one PhD candidate at MMU and acting as an external advisor to another candidate at University of Arts, London. I am also currently the external examiner for Manchester Business School’s MSc in Corporate communications and Reputation Management and the MSc in Public Affairs and Political Lobbying at the University of Ulster.

Research

My research has focused primarily on the area of public relations corporate communications and public affairs management and, in particular, on the nature of the managerial role in the corporate communications/ public affairs context, as well as examining the contribution of public relations and public affairs to the strategic management process in organisations. Indeed the area of managerial role behaviour in public relations and communication department context was the focus of my PhD research.

On-going collaborative research project with academic staff from a number UK and international universities [Salford University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of Cape Town, Massey University and the University of Orebro] to identify ,map and compare the core dimensions managerial practice in organisational communication and public affairs functions.

Member of a small team [5] of international colleagues awarded a highly prestigious research grant in July 2009 by the Research Foundation of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) to conduct research into the relationship between organisational structure and communication effectiveness. This award is one of the largest research grants awarded to a none US based research team.

I am also the co-founder and organiser of the annual International Public Relations Research Symposium which has been held at Lake Bled, Slovenia since 1994.

I am also co-founder and co-editor [ with Professor Phil Harris] of the Journal of Public Affairs and member of the editorial board on the Journal of Marketing Communication

Published work

Danny Moss has authored and edited over 80 books, journal articles and conference papers and is the. His most recent book is a second volume of international public relations case studies edited jointly with Melanie Powell and Barbara Desanto: Public relations cases: International perspectives.
