Graduation success spearheads a new career for Adrian

Studying at the University of Chester has helped one student who is graduating this week to change his career path.

Adrian Kwasnicki, 51, who lives in London, had worked for over 20 years in IT for British Airways, spending the last three years as the UK Field Service Manager.

Adrian said: “I decided to leave and move into people development using outdoor experiential learning as this combined my love of the outdoors with my desires to develop leaders and teams.”

Adrian worked as freelance trainer for five years before going into education as a Continuing Professional Development Advisor and Head of Outdoor Education at St. Wilfrid’s school in Blackburn where he has worked for the last five years.

Adrian said he took a major interest in coaching and decided to study for a Postgraduate Certificate (PGC) in Coaching with Barefoot Coaching, a programme supported by the University of Chester.

After gaining the PGC he decided to enhance his knowledge in coaching and leadership and continue his studies to Masters level. He said: “I was being asked to do more of this type of work in school and I also believe that the extra qualifications show a high level of competency in this area which can help put a client’s mind at ease.

“I did my PGC at Chester and decided to continue my studies there. I think it is a beautiful city. I had about six meetings there over a two year period of study and support from my tutor on the phone and via email. I liked the resources available online through the University which helped considerably with research. The icing on the cake will be to receive my certificate there in March.”

Adrian said achieving a Masters has helped him to achieve his career goals. He said: “I believe that people are more likely to want a coach who is competent. Having a Masters helps me in various ways – it has broadened my knowledge and given me more confidence as a coach. My clients feel that I am competent, even if they don’t know me, and it will hopefully make me more marketable.

“I think the whole experience has made me a better person, at home and at work.”

Denise Meakin, Adrian’s tutor stated, " Adrian came to the programme after completing a postgraduate certificate in Business and Personal Coaching with Barefoot Coaching Ltd. He was a committed, hard-working student who produced good quality work to complete his MA in Coaching for Transformational Leadership ( WBIS) in just 18 months."
