Placement alert…

CBS is pleased to announce that twelve of our students are currently out on placement. In February all twelve students came back to the University to meet up with their peers and give a presentation on their placement experience to date.

Ennis McAvera & Sophia Tirelli

An interesting day was had by all and we look forward to welcoming all twelve students back in September.

Ennis McAvera & Sophia Tirelli, both BA (Hons) Event Management Studying the same course and being best friends, we have shared many a good and bad time (such as when the printer stopped working 30 minutes before a deadline!).

We’ve also shared some work experience- both of us volunteered throughout our three year course with various organisations such as Chester Festivals - to gain the experience needed to back up our study. This was a brilliant way of
getting first-hand knowledge in our field as well as keeping ourselves current; something we’ve found future employers view as crucial.

Learning transferable skills via the lecture material and personal experiences of our tutors supported by up-to-date work experience is definitely the reason we are both in full time employment today. Placements such as Sophia coordinating Chester’s Bike Week and Ennis flying all the way to South Africa to organise a charity event certainly took a lot of time, energy and even some of our own money but gave us a leg up on the career ladder.

Looking back, it was the Event Management course, 24-hour library sessions (we don’t miss those!), our different types of work experience, and just a little bit of luck that pushed us career-wise. We have both stepped into amazing first jobs. Sophia is on a graduate programme at a major events and marketing organisation (P&MM) and Ennis is the Marketing & Sales Executive of Marketing Cheshire. But it wasn’t just the course and numerous work placements that helped; our tutors were second to none in terms of the support they gave.

They never tired of us persistently turning up at their offices while applying for jobs; coaching and helping us prepare for the many interviews we had - and didn’t get! In fact, that had to be one of the most frustrating things of entering a career after Uni- a lot of doors seemed to slam before we managed to push a couple open!  We’ve found the best thing about moving on from University, is knowing that throughout our career we will continue to have the assistance and support of our lecturers and the staff of the University of Chester.
