Chester Students thanked by the Council for helping two high profile events

Students from the University of Chester have been given a well earned thank you for their efforts in helping Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Arts and Festivals team deliver two high profile events in 2012.

The assistance they provided was invaluable and we look forward to working closely with the university in the future to provide more opportunities for their students.

In May, members of the university events society assisted in stewarding Chester’s successful Olympic torch celebrations, helping the well received event run smoothly.

After the success of the partnership, it was decided to give the society an opportunity to have a more involved role for another of Chester’s big events; the Christmas Lights Switch on.

The students gained vital experience and assisted in all areas of the event, from helping to write the initial event plan, conducting risk assessments right the way through to stewarding the 6,000 strong crowd on the night.

At the ceremony, held at the University, the students received certificates and thanks from the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Pamela Booher and Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Tim Wheeler. Special thanks were given to Chloe Griffin and Daniel McDermott-Roe who drove forward the plans and coordinated the stewarding on the night.

Councillor Booher said: “These students have really taken the opportunity to further develop their skills by working with us on two of our high profile events.

“The assistance they provided was invaluable and we look forward to working closely with the university in the future to provide more opportunities for their students.”

Professor Wheeler stated: “The University is committed to developing students who can apply their knowledge in practical ways and prides itself on encouraging them to work with, and benefit, the wider community.

“Groups such as the Chester Events Society embody these ideals and it is wonderful to see and celebrate these successes”.
