With a desire to be “going places, see the world and experience as many events industries as I can”, the Events Management student secured an enviable work placement in the fast-paced world of motorsport and even met legends Damon Hill OBE and two times world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Amazingly, Zara, 21, from Billinge, Lancashire had never driven on the motorway before she set off for the 144 mile trip to attend her interview for the placement, but her determination paid off!  An initial offer of five weeks’ work experience was extended to three months as Event Assistant for the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC) at the Silverstone Circuit. This culminated in a surprise invitation to assist with the presention of awards at  the BRDC Awards Lunch. Held at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, this involved  Zara standing alongside BBC Sport presenter Jake Humphrey to pass the Club’s historic motor racing awards to some of the great names in the sport, who in turn presented the trophies.

Zara said: “The atmosphere was electric. It was such a good year for motorsport and the surprise appearance of Lewis Hamilton, who everyone expected just to see on screen, was amazing. It was an honour to be invited back by BRDC to work at such an iconic and exclusive event.”

Zara is in the final year of an Events Management course, which she feels has prepared her well for becoming a freelance events manager. She added: “The University of Chester was my first choice and is a fantastic university. All the tutors have excellent experience in events which makes the course interactive”.

Tim Brown, Senior Lecturer in Events Management, added: “Every one of our students has a five week work experience placement contributing to the excellent employability rates of our graduates and Zara has been an inspiration to other students in achieving this placement. We wish Zara the very best during her final year and for her future.”
