Dr Valerie Gant

Senior Lecturer, Social Work

I am a qualified and registered social worker with over 10 years experience in Local Authority Adult Services.

I obtained a PhD in 2008 researching the needs of older carers of adults with learning disabilities. I have 7 years experience as a senior lecturer in social work and teach at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

I am interested in issues to do with care giving and with learning disability and in supporting students to develop their potential as future professionals.

Teaching

I am the Module Leader for:

SW5009 Social Care Organisations and inter professional working.

SW7023 Social Work Law and Ethics

NM5104 Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups

I contribute to a variety of other modules within the Faculty.

I coordinate the use of service users and carers within social work education at the University of Chester

I am a faculty representative for safeguarding issues.

I supervise postgraduate student dissertations.

 

I am an External Examiner for the University of Coventry MA Advanced Professional Practice.

I am a frequent reviewer for the British Journal of Learning Disabilities.

Research

My research interests are many and include carers and caregiving, learning disability and communication at end of life care.

I have carried out several research projects exploring the above areas as well as the contribution of service users and carers to student education.

I am interested in international social work and am a member of the European Social Work Research Association and have presented at several international social work conferences.
