Radio students at the University of Chester have this term been a getting closer insight into the industry from a series of high profile guests.

Bauer Radio’s Editor-in-Chief and multi-award-winning journalist, John Pickford was this year's first radio industry guest. Bauer has a portfolio of more than 50 radio stations across the UK. John has been in the industry for over 30 years and gives legal talks to presenters, producers and the multi media journalists within the Bauer media group. In a packed Radio Lab John told students how to ‘stay legal’ on air.

Richard Maddock delivered a talk to students who are on our Radio Documentary module. Richard studied Radio Production at our campus before having a successful management career at Radio City and within the Bauer group. He is now the Commissioning Editor at BBC Radio 5 Live. Richard described the commissioning process and gave the students an insight into the kind of documentaries they run at 5 Live and what they have coming up.

Chris Rick, another former student of our department, is the Content Director at Radio City. He came to speak to our Radio Management students. Chris gave tips on how to get into the industry and gave an insight into his daily role at Radio City.

Danny Bates is a recent University of Chester graduate. In the space of a few years he has gone from a role on the national radio station The Hits, to being breakfast show producer at Radio City and a Bauer Network producer. He spoke to students producing programmes and content for our own radio station The Cat Radio.

Radio City’s Steve Hothersall came in to speak to students about being a sports broadcaster. He gave an insight into how he got into commentary and sports reporting and how his role has changed over the years – from desk journalist to news editor to breakfast show presenter on Radio City Talk. Steve is also a presenter on LFCTV and he spoke about his position there and how he got into TV.

Stu Tolan, a presenter at Rock FM, has come in to record a radio show for The Cat Radio. He is the first in a series of guest presenters lined up.

Also lined up to visit are Mike Cass (Bauer Radio network content director), Jon Keighren (sports commentator) and Stu Haycock (a radio presenter who set up the community station Stafford FM).
