Media Showcase 2016

Posted on 2nd June 2016

On 2 June we hosted our North West Media Showcase 2016.

More than a hundred visitors attended the opening night of our annual exhibition of our students’ media work.

The exhibition included more than 150 images created by first, second and third year advertising, journalism and photography students, plus media research posters, website productions, short films and animations from advertising and film students, and showreels of television and broadcast journalism films, as well as graphic and video work from our Master’s students.

Radio students ran a live radio show from the event, including music produced by our music production students.

This collaborative student event was organized by a group of second year advertising, journalism, media and film students in cooperation with third year photography students, and with the support of first and third year radio students.

The event featured the launch of our annual Showcase Catalogue, as well as a number of guests from the media, communications and journalism industries.

The event also included the presentation of our annual Media Student Awards, awards nominated by students for fellow students who have supported and inspired their peers in their studies. Awards were presented by some of the event's guests including advertising producer Paul Smith and renowned sports writer Stephen Kelly.

Head of Media, Dr Alec Charles, said: ‘The students who organized this event, who supported this event and whose work contributed to this event should all be very proud. This was a great and fitting celebration of our students’ great efforts, great outputs and great talents.’

‘A fantastic event, great to see everyone’s work and show the support of students,’ said third year Radio Production and Digital Photography student Callum Ronan, who won an award for his dedication to the academic community.

‘A fantastic event held in stylish surroundings and excellent company. The students’ work on display was of the highest quality,’ added recent Television Production and Radio Production graduate Christian Tarpey, who last year won a prize in the BBC Worldwide Showcase format-pitching competition.

Third year Film Studies and Television Production student Elliot Booth called it a ‘brilliant platform for students to show their creativity and inspiration’ while first year Film Studies and Journalism student Natalie Walsh described it as ‘a wonderful event.’

Will Dell – a first year Radio Production and Journalism student who won an award for his fantastic enthusiasm and passion for his studies – said it had been ‘a great night, well-organised by all.’

Sandro Salemme, one of last year’s showcase organisers, recently elected as our Student Union’s new Vice-President, said the evening was ‘absolutely amazing… an incredible showcase.’

First year Advertising and Television Production student Danny O’Brien added: ‘It were brill!’
