‘PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY!’ Dr Julie Kirkham speaks to radio Merseyside about the influence of parent’s smartphone and tablet use on family-child relationships

Posted on 8th August 2016

Following publication of an Ofcom report last week, Dr Julie Kirkham was interviewed by Radio Merseyside about the detrimental impact of parents electronic device use on family dynamics.

Dr Julie Kirkham said: “The issues raised by the Ofcom report are current and highly important and have been investigated in projects by our own MSc Family and Child students. Whilst technology can be both useful and fun, psychological research tells us that direct, face to face interaction is crucial for the development and maintenance of human relationships, particularly during the first few years of life when infants are bonding with their parents and learning to speak. The Ofcom report reminds us of the importance of being mindful and balanced in our use of these devices.’
