Geographical Association Worldwise Quiz 2016 for schools in Cheshire West, Wirral and North Wales

Posted on 28th September 2016

Once again the Department of Geography and International Development at the University of Chester is hosting the popular Worldwise Local Quiz for Year 8/9 Geography students in the Chester area. It will be held on Wednesday 30 November 2016 at 4.30pm here at the University.

The Local Quiz is one element of WORLDWISE for secondary schools, bringing together schools and pupils for face-to-face geographical fun and challenge. It is designed to promote pupil interest in geography and also raise the profile of the subject within participating schools. It is also an occasion to build links between the local school geography departments as well as with the university.

Schools may enter up to TWO teams of THREE students from Year 8 or 9.

All competitors will receive a prize and certificate and the winning team will keep the Worldwise trophy for one year.

The Quiz is coordinated by the Geographical Association which sets the questions each year. It provides an opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their geographical knowledge, understanding and skills, especially in relation to current events and matters of global and local significance. The topics chosen as a basis for the rounds of the quiz are of general interest, relevance and topicality, and will reflect the background knowledge that can be expected of Years 8-10 pupils. Above all, the intention of the Worldwise Local Quiz is to make it a positive, stimulating and fun experience for all participants and observers.

The nature of the quiz is such that it involves in most cases simple ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers to the set questions. Individual questions are organised into rounds based on a topic focus or theme. Some questions are set as team questions and some are designed for answering on an individual basis. Some questions are based around other resources such as an Ordnance Survey map extract or an image.

There are past quiz questions on the GA website:

The website gives examples of the different types of themes for each round. The GA also produces the Worldwise Quiz Book. Details also on the website. You do not have to be a member of the GA to access these, or to take part in Worldwise Local.

There is small charge of £10 per team for the Quiz. Light refreshments will be served.

We do hope you will consider bringing a team (or two) to the Quiz. The more supporters the better! An entry form can be obtained by contacting Gill Miller at or call 01244 512190.

Completed entry forms along with the entry fee need to be returned to Gill Miller by Friday 11 November 2016.
