The Two Marys: Shropshire's Feminist Novelists, Mary Cholmondeley (1859-1925) and Mary Webb (1881-1927).

My research explores how these two Shropshire authors informed the wider literary culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Particular emphasis is placed on how their work both represented and influenced women. Using G.I.S. (Geographical Information Systems), I am plotting both their life and work within the Shropshire landscape and using deep mapping techniques to display a variety of information about them in one easily accessible resource. This database can be used by both scholars and others interested in these two authors and the Shropshire area in which they lived. My research also involves studying the concept of the literary pilgrimage and my database will enable the user to virtually walk the places which inspired the works of these two writers.
