Beswick Lecture Theatre, Parkgate Road Campus, Chester, CH1 4BJ
This professorial talk explores the author's journey of how ageing and ambivalent attitudes and practices towards older people have been constructed across time and space. It explores how both 'old age' and 'ageing populations' have been managed by policy makers, helping professions and academic disciplines. It is only in very recent years that ageing and social science approaches in particular have enriched a more critical yet Foucauldian inspired understanding of what it actually means to be an older person in relation to health and welfare issues. Drawing from the author’s critical research, the talk deconstructs how 'ageing is not a disease' and a 'disease is not ageing' and teases out important challenges and opportunities of social welfare provision for older people in the UK.
Tea and coffee will be served before the lecture and a complimentary drink will be available afterwards. The lecture is free but must be booked by emailing events@chester.ac.uk
