A case of pride

Suzanne Goddard is in the final year of her Creative Writing and English Language degree.

You have been irritating me for a while.
Each day getting fatter
like an over-stuffed olive.
I don’t quite know what to do with you yet.
I wouldn’t want to anger you any further.
Your stubbornness shows no sign of reduction
as you expand like an ink blot on cottoned fabric
Maybe one day you’ll do me a favour and leave,
but you definitely enjoy it here,
more than I do.
Even if you did disappear,
I know that you’d always leave
a collapsed outline of your former self,
like chicken skin left over from dinner.
