About us
Since 2004, the University of Chester has been pioneering a Foundation Degree in Government (FDiG), based on its established framework for work based learning and experience in supporting learning in the workplace.
FDiG is one of a number of occupationally-based pathways within the University's ground-breaking Work Based and Integrative Studies (WBIS) framework. Put simply, this is a flexible framework that allows the University to give academic reward for work-based and work-related learning.
The University is based centrally in the attractive historic cathedral city of Chester, with an additional campus in Warrington, and was originally founded in 1839 before being granted full University status in 2005. Throughout its history, it has had a strong focus in educating people for public services, so its role in developing people for contemporary public services represents a strong thread of continuity.
More recently, it has been an innovator in work based learning and, with its foundation degree for the Civil Service, broke new ground in adapting its proven learning approach to a predominantly on-line mode of delivery. This has the advantage of making study more flexible around workplace and domestic demands, as well as offering a portal to a wealth of electronic learning resources through the University's Virtual Learning Environment, IBIS.
