This part-time inter-professional programme is delivered in conjunction with Cheshire Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) Partnership and incorporates the AMHP training programme. 

The programme is approved by the General Social Care Council and, on successful completion of the PG Dip/Masters degree, social work candidates will also be awarded the PQ Higher Specialist Award in Social Work.

Programme Structure:

Postgraduate Certificate

The following modules will be completed:

  • Mental Health Law and Policy
  • Critical Perspectives on Mental Health
  • Legal Processes in Mental Health Practice
  • Diversity in Mental Health

Postgraduate Diploma

In addition to the above modules, students will also complete:

  • Learning and Assessment in Practice
  • Research

Masters degree

In addition to the above modules, students will also complete a 16,000 word dissertation

There are a range of assessment methods:

  • direct observation
  • practice portfolio
  • case studies

On successful completion of the AMHP training, candidates will be eligible for approval by the Local Authority to undertake the statutory role of the AMHP under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Extra Information: Applicants must hold a recognised professional qualification in social work, nursing, occupational therapy or psychology and have at least two years post registration experience. Students will normally be nominated and supported by their employer. Potential applicants should hold a first degree with a minimum of lower second class honours.
