Uniquely, students will spend a number of weeks attached to the Gravitas bariatric surgical unit near Chester. Students will gain clinical management experience with a particular emphasis on practical skills such as gastric band fills.

This is a unique opportunity for professionals involved in obesity to learn “best practice” from acknowledged experts in the field.

Students will be taught in-depth material regarding the rationale for surgery, the types of procedures performed and most importantly how to care for these patients before and after surgery.

Core Modules are:

  • Essential clinical management of the bariatric patient
  • Type 2 Diabetes and other metabolic complications of obesity
  • The surgical management of morbid obesity and its associated problems
  • Advanced clinical management of the bariatric patient
  • Research methods and dissertation

Optional modules include:-

  • The Obesity Epidemic- Weight Management as a Public Health Issue
  • Causes and Assessment of Obesity
  • Behaviour Modification in Weight Management

Students will be exposed to a variety of assessment methods designed to ensure that the content, outcomes and level of the modules are measured in a fair and transparent manner.

Examples include but are not limited to OSCE's, examinations, report writing, case scenarios and presentations.

This programme aims to provide healthcare professionals involved in the management of the morbidly obese with the professional skills to enhance the delivery of care to this group of patients.

Students will normally have a first degree in an appropriate subject. The classification of the first degree will normally be a 2:1 or above

Students will be from a range of academic and professional health backgrounds including doctors, nurses, dieticians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists etc.

Applicants should ideally be working within the field of clinical bariatric practice or caring for obese patients.
