This course enables qualified Counsellors to deepen their theoretical understanding, increase their counselling competencies, develop research skills and critically reflect upon their practice in the light of contemporary counselling developments. It provides a lively, challenging and supportive learning community.

Programme Structure:


The programme is modular in structure, consisting of six taught modules and a research dissertation.

Elective Modules:

A range of electives are available to enable students to pursue their own individual interests. Examples include:

  • Brief Counselling

  • Introduction to Supervision

Dissertation

Students conduct original research and produce a dissertation of 12, 000 - 16,000 words.

Self, peer and tutor assessment are utilized. Formal assessment normally consists of a written assignment of 5,000 words, integrating theory and professional practice. There are no examinations.

The MA in Counselling Studies aims to enhance continuing professional development by provididng a forum for students to critically reflect upon their practice in the light of contemporary theory, research and debates within the counselling profession. Students have attested to the value of the programme in broadening their career horizons and enhancing their academic opportunities. Some excellent dissertations of publishable quality have been produced and Chester MA graduates can be found in a wide range of challenging and influential counselling positions. A number of graduates have also progressed to doctoral studies.

  • A Diploma in Counselling or equivalent qualification
