Why study this course:

Accreditation by BACP as a counselling supervisor requires, as part of the criteria, the completion of a substantial course of training in Counselling Supervision.

The move towards regulation in the counselling Profession is likely to increase the demand for properly trained supervisors.

Programme Structure: 

The programme is modular in structure, consisting of 3 taught modules.

Module 1: Counselling Supervision Theory

Module 2: Counselling Supervision: Practice

Module 3: Professional and Ethical Issues in Counselling Supervision

Self, peer and tutor assessment are utilised. Formal assessment consists of a 5,000 word assignment for each module.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision provides advanced professional training for counsellors who hold a Diploma in Counselling (or equivalent qualification) and relevant professional experience.

The course provides a sound theoretical base and the opportunity to develop practical skills in supervision.

Entry to the programme will be based on evidence of:

  • A Diploma in Counselling or equivalent qualification
  • Completion of a minimum of 400 hours of supervised counselling practice since qualifying as a counsellor, over a period of at least three years
  • Practice as a counsellor currently receiving supervision
  • A reference from your counselling supervisor supporting your statement of counselling hours practised and your readiness to undertake the course
  • Willingness to work within the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice
  • Possession of a professional liability insurance policy which will cover you for the duration of the course
  • Having a supervisee, or that you will have a supervisee, by the start of the course
  • Being a reflective practitioner with the ability to offer a balance between support and challenge and have the potential to offer a safe supervisory relationship.
  • Students who have completed the MA module in Supervision will normally be able to claim an APEL exemption for Module 1 of this course.

All successful candidates who receive an offer of a place for this course will be required to apply for a Disclosure and register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
