Biomedical Science

MSc/Postgraduate Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate

Biomedical Science involves the study of various biological and medical sciences relevant to our understanding of human health and disease.

Course MSc/Postgraduate Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate
Length 1 year - Full Time, 2-6 years - Part Time
Start date August 2012

Biomedical scientists are essential members of the modern healthcare team and in collaboration with doctors, nurses and other professions allied to medicine aid in the diagnosis of disease, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment, and research into causes and cures of diseases.

Why study this course?

This vocationally-oriented course is specifically designed for those students wishing to gain employment as biomedical scientists, either in industry or within the health sector. As such, it leads to a professionally recognised qualification, being externally approved by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

Features

Biomedical Sciences is taught by enthusiastic academic and professional biomedical science staff in modern, spacious laboratories housed on campus. Teaching and learning involves a range of methods including lectures, seminars, group discussions and presentations.

The academic staff are research active and continually thrive to promote research within areas of Biomedical Science, where they regularly publish their research findings and discuss their work at national and international conferences.

Modules that are included in the MSc Biomedical Science degree cover a wide range of scientific subjects, information technology and all the major disciplines of biomedical sciences (i.e. haematology and transfusion science, clinical medicine, medical microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, histology and cellular pathology).

The entire course is integrated through a study of the biology of disease, including modern concepts and applications of biomedical science in research, diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders.

Level 7

The modules include:

  • BI7111 Research Methods in Biomedical Science - core module
  • BI7105 Clinical Medicine & Cellualr Pathology - core module
  • BI7104 Analytical & Molecular Techniques in Biomedical Science - core module
  • BI7106 Current Issues in Biomedical Science - core module
  • BI7108 Blood Sciences - core module
  • BI7101 Clinical Immunology & Microbial Pathogenesis - core module
  • BI7112 Research Dissertation

In common with science programmes at Chester, the MSc in Biomedical Science is a vocational-based course, with the emphasis on key skills, knowledge and understanding, identified by potential employers as essential for today's scientific professions. Specialist personnel from the health sector (Senior Chief Biomedical Scientists and Medical Doctors) contribute too many aspects of the course.

Each module is designed to be studied over a 10 week learning period, commencing with a 3 day residential school at the university. Each residential school introduces students to the module content (including support provision, learning materials and assessment details) and provides an opportunity for the delivery of some subject matter, and where appropriate, relevant practical work.
