Postgraduate Certificate

The Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health programme provides opportunities for the development of a critically informed understanding of contemporary issues in health and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to the study of public health.

It has been developed as a joint initiative between the Faculty of Health and Social Care and the Centre for Public Health, thereby integrating research and practice-based skills and knowledge so that the programme is underpinned by evidence-based practice.

Why study this programme?

The programme takes account of the rapidly changing emphasis within the field and aims to equip students with a portfolio of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes applicable to work in a variety of settings.

Features

This programme is modular and flexible and is currently offered on a part-time basis over the duration of one to two academic years.

This programme is delivered at the Riverside Campus in Chester.

The core modules for the programme are:

Health Promotion in a Public Health Context
20 Credits
Principles of Epidemiology
20 Credits
Inequalities in Health
20 Credits

Routes exist for the Postgraduate Certificate to be further developed into a Postgraduate Diploma or MSc Award in Health Improvement and Wellbeing.

Students will be exposed to a variety of assessment methods designed to ensure that the content, outcomes and level of the modules are measured in a fair and transparent manner.

This will include essays and examinations.

Health promotion specialist, public health managers, smoking cessation coordinators, infection control managers.

Applicants should normally be working in the filed of public health.

Entry requirements include a minimum of a lower second class honours degree in a related subject area, or equivalent professional qualifications and relevant work experience.

Applicants without a first degree will normally be able to demonstrate extensive experience in the field of public health or health promotion, together with evidence of recent study or writing at an appropriate level.
