In 2000, the Journal of Occupational Health identified that there is clearly a need for occupational health education to progress through all levels, from foundation to master's degrees, so that there is a natural academic and career pathway for professionals to further their knowledge and skills.

Currently there is a shortage of educational provision for Occupational Health professionals at Master's level, therefore the Postgraduate Certificate in Occupation Health has been developed to meet this need, and to offer a unique educational experience for these professionals.

Why study this course?

This flexible and dynamic programme will prepare students to develop the qualities necessary to be effective within their own professional area relevant to the practice of Occupational Health. Students will be provided with the educational experience to facilitate the higher levels of judgement, discretion and decision making needed in the working environment, and will gain professional expertise to work collaboratively and flexibly within Occupational Health.

This programme is delivered at the Riverside Campus in Chester.

Programme Structure

The core modules for the programme are:

Health Promotion and Occupational Health  20 Credits
Management Strategies for Occupational Health 20 Credits
The Working Environment 20 Credits

A blended approach to learning has been developed to support all modules, to include supporting materials located on the University intranet. 

Students will be exposed to a variety of assessment methods designed to ensure that the content, outcomes and level of the modules are measured in a fair and transparent manner.

In this programme, the following methods are used: seminar presentations, essays, literature review, and policy and report formulation.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Occupational Health meets the educational and professional development needs of Occupational Health professionals who work at a senior level.  Our flexible and dynamic programme will prepare students to develop the qualities necessary to be effective within their own professional area relevant to the practice of Occupational health.

The Postgraduate Certificate may be taken into a Postgraduate Diploma, or a full master's degree, and would fit into the MSc Professional practice, MSc Advanced Practice, or the MSC Health Improvement and Wellbeing programmes within the Faculty of Health and Social Care.

  • This programme is primarily designed for practitioners who are working in occupational health. Applicants will normally hold a first degree in a health and social care related subject.
  • The classification of the first degree will normally be a 2:1 or above.
  • Applicants without a first degree will normally be required to demonstrate extensive experience in a closely related area of occupational health, together with evidence of recent study or writing at an appropriate level.
  • All prospective students must formally apply for a place on the programme. An application form and academic interview underpin the recruitment process. These form the basis on which the suitability of candidates will be decided.
