MEd

The MEd in Professional Education is a programme of teacher preparation for health and social care professionals.

The overarching aim of the programme is to produce a competent, independent educator capable of promoting the development and delivery of professional education across a variety of settings within an inter-professional and inter-agency context.

For nurses, midwives and health visitors, successful completion of the programme leads to an approved teacher entry on the Professional Register of nurses, midwives and health visitors.

This programme is specifically designed for health and social care professionals, in both practice and academic settings, who wish to further their careers in education.

 

Features

This is an interprofessional programme for health and social care practitioners who have an educational focus within their roles. Students are encouraged to assume responsibility for their own learning, as well as for the utilisation of learning resources available to them.

Varied teaching and learning strategies are employed in meeting programme objectives. There is some didactic teaching, but emphasis is placed on group work, discussion, blended learning, seminar presentations, project work and case discussions.

This programme is delivered at the Riverside Campus in Chester.

Students may exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Education if they complete three core modules:

Students may exit with an MEd in Professional Education if they complete the six core modules and a Dissertation (180 credits).

Students will be exposed to a variety of assessment methods designed to ensure that the content, outcomes and level of the modules are measured in a fair and transparent manner.

Knowledge and intellectual skills will be assessed through coursework, and students will be asked to demonstrate thinking and cognitive ability through written assignments, portfolios, seminar presentations and reflective accounts.

All aspects of the assessment strategy will be used to evaluate transferable/key skills and, where relevant, mapped against national benchmarks.

This programme is designed to promote career development for health and social care professionals in education roles, in both academic and practice settings, within a wide range of organisations.

The admission criterion for student entry to the Master of Professional Education programme will normally be: *Successful completion of a degree or equivalent. The classification of the first degree will normally be a 2:1 or above.

In certain circumstances, candidates without a first degree but with exceptional, high level professional responsibility, experience and motivation will be admitted directly to M level study on the provision of evidence demonstrating their capability to study at this level.

Candidates must have contemporary experience and access to learners in the practice or academic setting.

The Faculty of Health and Social Care operates a well defined AP(E)L system, and students may claim specific credit exemption against modules in the programme in line with the University's procedures.
