Programme Structure:

The programme will run over a calendar year. The structure of the programme is divided into three consecutive modules:

(i) NM7300 Teaching and Learning in the Clinical Context (20 credits)

This module aims to set teaching and learning within both a higher education and a clinical context; to critically examine theories of learning and teaching and their relevance to teaching and learning facilitation in the clinical context; and to support participants in reflecting on their own practice of learning and teaching.

It will provide the theoretical underpinning on which to build an understanding of pedagogy and learning theory; and will therefore also serve as a base on which to build in the rest of the PGCTLCP programme.

This module also commences the process of enhancing the participants' critical reflection on their roles as teacher and learning facilitator, and facilitates the articulation of their own evolving Personal Philosophy of Teaching.

(ii) NM7301 Assessing Learning and Evaluating Teaching (20 credits)

This module aims to review and critically analyse the theories which inform both assessment and evaluation in the broader higher education context; and to apply these theories to actual practice within the clinical setting.

(iii) NM7302 Delivering Teaching and Facilitating Learning Opportunities (20 credits)

This module aims to critically review the range of teaching approaches and techniques available to participants within clinical practice; and to relate the available research on the effectiveness of various approaches and techniques to the actual experience of participants.

It will also examine the crucial role played by learning support, learning resources and C&IT in promoting teaching and learning in the modern clinical and educational setting.

Description:

There are no formal exams for this course. Each module is assessed separately, by submission of a series of written assignments, for example:

NM7300:

An essay on the theories of learning and teaching covered in this module, and an articulation of individuals’ evolving personal philosophy of teaching

NM7301:

A practical report which relates experience to theory, and a reflective critique of the process of peer observation of teaching

NM7302:

A reflective commentary on a range of teaching and learning approaches, and a critical evaluation of discussion in the programme.
