Dr Ronan McGarrigle

Lecturer

Ronan teaches cognitive psychology, biological psychology, research methods, and statistics. His main research interests are on how humans are able to overcome various obstacles to communicate successfully in everyday environments. Specifically, much of his research centres on the experience and measurement of cognitive effort and fatigue in many populations (e.g., individuals with cognitive and/or sensory impairment, and non-native language speakers).

Qualifications

Ronan received his undergraduate degree (BSc 1st class honours) in Psychology at University of Manchester (2012). He then went on to complete his PhD titled; ‘Listening-related effort and fatigue in young adults and school-aged children’ at University of Manchester in December, 2015 under the supervision of Professor Kevin Munro, Dr Andrew Stewart, and Dr Piers Dawes.

Overview

Ronan is an active researcher and member of the Experimental Psychology Research Group within the Psychology department at Chester.

Following his PhD, Ronan obtained a scholarship from the ERASMUS MUNDUS exchange network in Auditory Cognitive Neuroscience and spent 6 months as a post-doctoral fellow in the Communication Sciences Research Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (Ohio, USA) investigating children with listening difficulties under the supervision of Professor David Moore. Before arriving at Chester in 2017, he continued his research in the US, this time conducting further research on listening-related effort and fatigue in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN.

Teaching

Ronan lectures and leads workshops on the undergraduate and masters cognitive psychology and biological psychology modules, as well as teaching research methods and statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Ronan is also responsible for supervising undergraduate dissertations.

Research

Ronan is interested uses a mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate:

  • Cognitive load and mental effort
  • Speech understanding in noise
  • Listening-related effort and fatigue
  • Sustained and divided attention

Ronan is currently an active member of: (i) Experimental Psychology Society, (ii) the British Society for Audiology Special Interest Group on Hearing and Cognition, and (iii) American Auditory Society, and also an ad-hoc reviewer on the following journals: Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, Ear & Hearing, International Journal of Audiology, Frontiers in Psychology, Journal of the American Academy of Audiology.
