Dr Mzwandile Mabhala

Reader, Public Health and Wellbeing

Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology at the University of Chester, with expertise in epidemiology, social justice and research in a wide range of public health projects. I have had several senior public health roles within UK National Health Service and higher education institution including my role as senior public health skills development programme at the University of Oxford Institute of Health Sciences.

I am a reviewer for the National institute of health research, International Journal of Preventive Medicine; and International Journal for public health research and environment. I am also a senior research fellow at Newman University and Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health.  I am editor for OMICS Group International – eBooks. I was an invited speaker at the “UK public health Festival in Manchester in 4 July 2013, presented a research paper at the International Public Health Conference in Kuching, Malaysia in August 2013. 

I contributed several chapters in Key Concepts in Public Health  (2009), and a chapter “Policy Drivers” in Key Concepts in Palliative Care (2010). London: Sage.  I am currently authoring a book “Health Improvement and wellbeing”. My workhas been published in international peer-reviewed journals, and I also co-authored Key Concepts in Public Health, an internationally available textbook.

Teaching

I am the programme leader for Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health, and contribute to additional postgraduate level teaching on epidemiology and public health.

I also undertake supervision of Masters, DrPH and PhD students.

Research

My main research area is social epidemiology, and I work collaboratively with colleagues in the field of public health nationally and internationally. My research has centred on on socio-economic determinants of inequalities in health, and I was the North West England co-ordinator of the International Study on University Students’ Determinants of Health.

My recently funded projects are: Behavioural intervention “Making contact count” 2013 and UKIERI India UK Staff Exchange Programme Guidelines
