The University of Chester is pleased to be a part of the International Santander Universities network, which specialises in financing and supporting educational institutions. The bank has been working in the education sector for over 20 years and now comprises of over 1,100 universities worldwide.

An agreement with the University was signed in 2012 through its Santander Universities Global Division. The partnership is well established with many investments. Since the signing, the bank’s gifts to the University has provided funding for numerous undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships and awards, academic exchanges, support for entrepreneurial activities, for research. Overall supporting the development of the University.

International Research Excellence Awards

Grants of between £500 and £1,000 available to support staff of the University involved in internationally excellent research projects linked to countries within the Santander Universities network. The scheme also offers funding to support student field studies and Visiting Fellowships of up to £5,000 to support visits by leading scholars from Santander countries to work on collaborative research projects with colleagues at the University of Chester.

Awards for Outstanding Contribution to the Community

Prizes awarded annually at the University’s Valedictory Service to those students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to volunteering projects within the local community. The prizes of up to £500 each are awarded to support the future work of the community organisations with which the recipients have worked.

Community Project Fund

The Community Project Fund provides grants of up to £1,000 to support projects proposed by students or staff of the University that will benefit the local community. Funded projects enable community and voluntary organisations to access the expertise and experience of University of Chester volunteers, and working with these organisations allows our students to learn new skills and develop innovative ideas that make a difference to their community.

Ambassador Awards

Grants awarded to support students of the University undertaking overseas volunteering or study placements which aim to promote global citizenship and develop links between the University of Chester and institutions in the Santander Universities network.

Awards for Excellence in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship

Scholarships awarded to graduating students who are setting up or developing new business ventures. Open to graduates of the University of Chester and its partner institutions, grants of up to £1,000 are awarded by the Riverside Innovation Centre (RIC) to support start-up costs or contribute towards expansion activities of these new businesses. All of the participating graduates are offered on-going bespoke support from the RIC, and may be offered the opportunity to develop their business as a resident of one of the RIC Acceleration Units.

University of Chester Enterprise Challenge

This annual competition challenges students to develop ideas for a novel and entrepreneurial business venture. Shortlisted finalists then go on to pitch their business ideas to a ‘Dragons Den’ panel of eminent local business leaders and entrepreneurs.

SME Internships

The SME Intern Programme provides opportunities for final year students and recent graduates of the University to undertake a three month paid placement with a local SME. The internships provide companies with an effective way of evaluating an individual’s potential as an employee and a number of graduates supported through the Programme have gone on to secure long-term positions with the SME that hosted their internship.
