Assistant Technical Officer - Thornton Science Park

Rory has worked for the University since November 2014 and his main job role is to assist in the preparation, setting up and deliverance of undergraduate practical laboratory sessions with the other technicians and members of the academic staff team.


  • BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science, covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics
  • Level 3 NVQ in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  • Institute of Safety and Health (IOSH) Qualified in managing safely


His main field of work though is within the Mechanical Engineering degree, though helps out broadly across departments in Natural Sciences, Chemical engineering, Chemistry and Biotechnology. When he’s not preparing labs, he’s more than happy to be helping out assisting with any research that’s taking place that staff need an extra pair of hands with or require something making for said research.

Rory has research interests in the Automotive area, as he has a keen interest in Motorsport and vehicle modification, he spends a lot of his time being a hobby mechanic. When he’s not being a hobby mechanic, he is also part of an organisation called the Air Cadets as a civilian instructor at 1378 Squadron in Mold.

In this role he is responsible for organising day walks, expeditions and Duke of Edinburgh’s’ for cadets as he’s s a qualified Basic expedition Leader, he also teaches a number of lessons on the squadron broadening the knowledge of the cadets aged 12-20 in the basic aeronautical and history of flight subjects. In his spare time he enjoys going on drives into North Wales, going to classic and modified car shows and spending time with family!
