The Department has a long tradition in delivering physical education and sports science degrees.
Sport and Exercise Science Department
We are immensely proud of the tradition the Department has for delivering high quality degrees, as well as the quality of our teaching and our rapidly developing research pedigree in Sport and Exercise Sciences (SES). Our standing in various league tables for SES reflects, among other things, the very high score achieved in the last Teaching Quality Assessment exercise and the national and international profile of staff research, reflected in the fact that we were in the top 20 of all SES departments ranked in the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. Student satisfaction surveys rank us highly among the increasing number of sports-related degrees elsewhere and research-informed teaching is at the forefront of our activities at all levels.
All undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are staffed by a good balance of well-qualified, research-active staff who are, first and foremost, teachers with a breadth of professional backgrounds in PE teaching, sports development, sports science support, coaching, personal training combined with an interesting array of national and international sports-related achievements.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at ses@chester.ac.uk and your query will be forwarded to the appropriate person. Alternatively, you can contact any member of staff specifically by using the contact details on the Department Staff page. We hope that you enjoy your visit to our site.

Students provide sports science support to King's School rowing team
Students from the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences were recently involved in providing sport science support to high-level rowers from the local King's School. Nick Dobbin, Charles Bowden (both Level 4), Daniel Woodcock and Alexandra Lodge (both MSc Sports Sciences) conduced a series of physiological tests on 12 athletes from the club as part of the athletes' preparations before leaving for a training camp in Belgium. Working with SES technician Dean Burt, the students will also be involved in providing written and oral feedback to the athletes and coaches to help guide their intense training programme.
This is to become a longitudinal project between the Department and the School, who are one of the top eight rowing schools in the country. It will provide excellent opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students to work with athletes and coaches, with students developing key applied sport science skills both in the field and the laboratory.
Sport & Exercise Science student Nick Dobbin was awarded young male sports volunteer of the year at the recent Cheshire West and Cheshire Sports Awards.
Sport & Exercise Science PhD student Jamie Highton was awarded the Elsevier Student Oral Presentation Award at the Annual BASES conference for his presentation 'Carbohydrate-protein ingestion during self-regulated simulated multiple-sprint sport activity'.
Dr. Kevin Lamb a reader within the Department of Sport & Exercise Science has recently been awarded Fellowship of BASES.
Dr. Moira Lafferty a sport psychologist within the Department of Sport & Exercise Science has recently been appointed Chief Supervisor/Registrar Elect for the Division of Sport & Exercise Psychology of the British Psychological Society.
